Our Career

The lights go up, the guys get set

Now the rush begins, we run on stage

Our hearts are tense, we're set to go

Yes, they’re really here

You know it’s just the start, the start of our career

We’re winning, beginning the race

The first song starts; the crowd go wild

As smoke fills the air, we're dancing now

All having fun, just one more song

Then they cry encore

You know it’s just the start, the start of our career

We leave the stage, applause is fine

Our hearts are not in it, our love is gone

We've done our time, we need to go

Yes, we're nearly through

You know it’s just the end, the end of our career

We're leaving, but life still goes on

It's the end of our career, the end of our career

It's the end of our career, the end of our career

Our Career
& original song versions

"Our Career" was originally written and recorded in 1983 using the infamous cassette to cassette bouncing technique. There were no sequencers available so it was all played live and overdubbed with each bounce. The main instruments used were a Roland Dr55 drum machine, a Roland Juno 6 polyphonic synth and a Jen SX1000 mono synth. The only "outboard" gear available was a Melos analogue echo. The second incarnation of the song came in 1986 when we started to play live gigs, by that stage we had a better drum machine (Roland TR-707) and a polysynth with memories (Roland Juno 106). The most notable addition at that point was a Roland MC-202 sequencer, which allowed sequenced bass lines (Roland SH2) as well as sequenced lead lines using the inbuilt MC-202 mono synth, all synced with the drum machine. We also had a Casio CZ-101 adding further colour to our sound. Moving to the present version of the song, it was recreated using Logic and various soft synths as well as some of the original equipment. A few "risers" were included to enhance & polish this version and the lyrics were revised, but it is essentially the same song. Have a listen to the various versions ...and see for yourself!
